Nature & Hiking

Kemenesalja is one of the most beautiful regions of Western Transdanubia.

Ság Hill, rising beside Celldömölk, is the westernmost member of the Balaton Uplands witness hills. The nearly 5-million-year-old, 279-metre-high volcano has been a protected landscape area since 1975. A large part of its basalt cap was quarried away, leaving behind a spectacular natural feature: the crater.

In this unique natural setting, the Ság Volcano Trail unfolds across 12 stations, offering a vivid presentation of the volcanic process. A geological nature trail running among the rocks illustrates the formation and evolution of the hill.

On the eastern edge of the Ság Hill plateau stands the Trianon Cross, built in 1933 and visible from afar. It was erected by the people of Kemenesalja as a protest against the peace diktat that dismembered our country. It is the largest monument of its kind in Hungary.

The Ság Hill Museum, housed in the former transformer building of the basalt quarry and renovated in 2012, presents the natural and cultural heritage of the landscape, part of the archaeological findings from Ság, as well as the history of quarrying and viticulture — all through a hands-on, interactive and engaging exhibition.

The Kemenes Volcano Park houses the country's only volcanological exhibition. In a striking building spanning nearly 1,000 square metres, visitors can explore global volcanic activity, the volcanoes of the Carpathian Basin and Hungary, and finally the local highlight — the 5.5-million-year-old basalt volcano, Ság Hill. The exhibition combines interactive and traditional elements to bring the world of volcanoes to life.

Wine & Gastronomy

The Ság Hill wine region is known for its unique volcanic soil and distinctive wines. The local wineries welcome wine lovers throughout the year.
